“Sasha, I mean this in the nicest way possible, but you don’t have any friends. Besides Ellie and me anyway.”
I’m going to fuck him up. I watch as Sasha squeezes her eyes closed, and I begin to crack my knuckles.
“Something isn’t right. I’m really worried about you, Sash.”
Sash?
“I don’t mind dropping him off at all; you know that. It’s just… it’s not like you to leave like that. Then, you said you were already back in Whispering Valley, and you would come get him. But now you’re saying your car broke down on the way home. If your car broke down, then you wouldn’t have said you could come get him…”
“Jesus, what’s with this fucking guy?”
“Who’s that?” I hear him ask her before she tries, and fails, to walk away.
I trap her between my arms and pin her against the counter. She pushes against my chest, trying to make me back away, but I'm not going anywhere.
“Sasha? Who’s there?”
She grunts as she continues fighting to get me away from her.
“Are you okay?”
Finally, she gives up and gets back to her conversation.
“Yes, I’m fine. I promise—”
“I’m on my way.”
“Wait!”
When she doesn’t hear an answer from him, she looks at the screen of her phone and confirms that he’s hung up.
“Why the fuck did you do that?” she screams at me.
“He sounds like a whiny little bitch,Sash. I couldn’t fucking stand listening to him question you anymore.”
“Well, no one invited you into our conversation anyway,” she yells.
Her fight is back as she pushes hard on my chest with both hands.
“You can’t tell me he’s just a friend. There’s more there.Youmight think you’re friends, but doeshe?”
“Ahh!” She beats on my chest with her palms before she finally gives up again. “You’re a pain in the ass; you know that?”
She inhales a deep breath and then exhales before continuing.
“We dated after I got out of high school, but it’s been over since my dad died.Okay? Can you please move now?”
It takes everything I have in me to move away from her. I’m glad I know, and I’m not stupid enough to think she’s never been in a relationship, but the fact that she’s still so close to her ex pisses me off.
I walk away from her slowly and take a seat on her sofa. Once I’m sitting, I look over at her. She’s facing the cabinets now, with both hands on the countertop. Her head hangs like she’s deep in thought.
“I don’t suppose you’ll be leaving before he gets here, will you?” She turns around and awaits my answer.
“Not a fucking chance in hell.”
Chapter Twenty-One
“Blade,I already can’t do this. It’s hour one of day one of this sham of a relationship, and I already don’t know what to tell someone about where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing. How the hell am I supposed to explain why I’m suddenly associating with you?”
