Chapter One
My head is poundingwhen I wake up, and there is a ringing in my ears. It takes my eyes forever to focus. When they do, I find I’m in an unfamiliar room. My arms are heavy when I try to move them, and I don’t realize there is a large iron cuff around my ankle until I hear the clank of the metal chain that it’s connected to.
“What the…?”
That’s when the memory of the men in my house comes rushing back.
Oh, fuck.
I sit up and take in the sight around me. I’m terrified to find that I’ve been stripped naked and secured to an old metal bed frame. My hands fly between my legs. I don’t feel the tenderness down there that usually comes after having sex.
Especially sex with Blade.
Blade, who I turned away just before I was taken. I’m such a fucking idiot. If I would have let him in, would he have been able to stop them from taking me? Or would he have been killed for trying? I cry out for him. Does he know where I am? Will he come for me? Rescue me? Defend my honor? Does he still care about me?
I find little relief in the fact that I’m not sore between my legs. Wherever I am, whoever it was who brought me here, they haven’t completely violated me…Yet. They’ve only punched me, thrown me down, abducted me…
God only knows what they did to me while they stripped me of my clothing. Just because they didn’t fuck me doesn’t mean they didn’t have their grubby hands all over me.
I study the mattress that I’m on. It’s bare of any bedsheets, and it’s absolutely filthy. There are various stains of different colors, and I try not to think about what bodily fluids left them behind as tears stream down my face.
I look around the tiny room I’m in. The wooden floorboards look very old, and the paint is chipping from the walls. There is a bucket in the corner with flies buzzing around it. I’m scared to know what’s in it. The room feels like it’s about ninety degrees. The air is thick, and it’s hard to breathe.
The sole window is boarded up, and I can’t tell if it’s day or night. Or where I am or if there’s any chance of getting out of here. I can hear the clatter of glass and the low din of people gathered together somewhere beneath me.
This must be their clubhouse.
Death’s Road.
Is Michael here? Did they hurt him? Will they let me see him? Will they let me go?
Before I’m able to ask myself any more questions that will likely never be answered, I hear someone unlock the door to the room. When it opens, I see the last person I ever would’ve expected on the other side of it.
“Elena?”
I pull my legs up and cross my feet at the ankles to keep her from being able to see me.
“Ah,” she turns and speaks to someone I can’t see from where I am. “Go get Jasper. The bitch is awake.”
But I don’t understand the meaning of her words.
“Elena, please. Can you help me get out of here?”
“Help you getout?” she laughs. “I’m one of the lucky ones who helped bring youin.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You will soon enough.”
She waits just inside the room, and the noise from below floats through the open door. It sounds like there are a lot of people downstairs.
“Is Michael here?”
“Not anymore,” she answers with a smirk, her attitude stronger than ever. “Now shut up before I come over there andmakeyou be quiet.”
I wipe the moisture from my cheeks, but they’re wet with newly shed tears in no time. What did she mean by that? Is he at home? Is he dead? I hear several men’s voices, and my heart races the closer they get to this room. By the time they enter I’m shaking so badly, I feel like I’m going to fall off the bed.
“Hello, princess,” the one I’m assuming to be Jasper beams as he waltzes into the room. “Welcome to my home.”
