There was an awkward silence.
“Cam, are you still there?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m going to Madam Delour’s.”
“No, Scarlet, listen to me.” He sounded panicked. “This is a bad idea.”
“But it’s all arranged.”
“By whom?”
“I’m not telling you. You’ll get angry.”
“Let’s talk this through first. Okay?”
“It’s decided.”
“Don’t get in the Rolls.”
“How did you know they’re sending one?”
“Because that’s how it’s done.”
I thought him cruel for trying so hard to stop my adventure.
He made a rude noise. “Tell me you didn’t go through De Sade?”
“He’s been good to me. He’s been there for me.”
“You spent time with him?”
“Kind of.”
It had been a session like no other. De Sade had punished me so very much, but I had deserved it. That scar on my thigh was testament to how hard he’d pushed me. Cameron need never know about our session - De Sade had told me that.
During those hours with him he’d revealed our community’s darkest secret: there was one other man besides Cameron who was a true master. He could unravel my secret and splay it open - rid me of this death wish. He would be able to reach inside and save me - if I willingly gave myself over to him. This man was capable of promoting me.
No, don’t let Cameron ruin your chance.
I’d had no choice but to take this leap of faith. De Sade had warned that in forty-eight hours the placement would be given to another submissive if I didn’t get on that plane. And there were so many subs in line. It would take years to get another invitation as prestigious as this one. Turning down this honor now would jeopardize any future chance.
Of course I’d run right home from work after telling my boss I wasn’t sure when I’d be coming back. I was warned my job might not be waiting for me. But this was a gamble worth taking. My destiny was a magnet pulling me towards possibilities that were impossible to resist.
I’d quickly packed and then left an envelope on the kitchen table containing next month’s rent for my roommate, so he wouldn’t be short. Hours later, De Sade had turned up at my studio apartment with my first class ticket - one way until my return date had been finalized. It was always done this way, De Sade had explained to me. All I had to do was say “yes”to leaving right this second.
“No regrets,”I whispered to myself.
The shiny black Rolls appeared out of the darkness.
“Scarlet, can you hear me?” Cameron asked.
The limo idled on the curb in front of me.
My heart fluttered. This was really happening. “I have to go.”
“No, no, no, don’t hang up—”
