Jake looked too damn relaxed for someone who’d just violated my wishes.
He raised his hands in defense. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“You talked with her?”
“I was checking on Rue, yes.”
“Dominic’s watching over her. I have it covered.”
“I wanted to make sure she’s settling in.”
“What did you tell her, Jake?”
“Honest answer?”
“You have no right to interfere.”
“I care about you. This is me making sure you don’t mess things up again.”
“Again?” I seethed.
“Yes. Now if you’ll excuse me.” He turned to walk away.
I grabbed his bicep. “What do you want?”
“For you to be happy, Shay. That’s all.” He looked down at my hand on his arm.
“I don’t want you near her.” I released my grip. “We all know your brand of fuckery is an acquired taste.”
“Nothing sinister went on in there.”
“You better not have touched her.”
“Fuck off.” He banged my shoulder as he continued down the hallway.
“I know what you’re like,” I called after him.
Jake pivoted. “You pushed me away. Don’t you dare pretend otherwise.”
“You went back to your ex.”
“Rylee and I worked through our differences. That much is true. Things are good…considering the circumstances.”
“You walked out on me.”
“Because you wouldn’t let me in, Shay.”
“Not true.”
“I know this place is important to you, but you put it above everyone, including yourself and your own needs. You can’t continue like this.”
Chrysalis was my life. These were my people. I continued to mull over the facts as I stared him down. “I gave you everything.”
“Your ‘everything’ is compromised.”
“You seem to enjoy the security I bring to this place. It gives you the freedom to be a sadist.”
His brows shot up. “Until you see whatyou areyou’ll always be broken.”
