Instead, I slid back into the crowd.

Her expression turned to one of confusion when she heard the cheers accompanied by the announcement that Bitcoin Asshole had won her. He’d thrown enough money into the mix to secure himself a newbie submissive for the night.

Rue was escorted away by the other Dom. She glanced back at me, bewildered. I assumed they were taking her to a room where she’d wait for him. Maybe even prepare her in the kinds of ways I didn’t want to put my mind to.

Faulkner grabbed my sleeve. “What was that?”

“What was what?”

“How do you know her?” He was trying to clock who was behind the mask. “Do that again and see what happens.”

“Take your hand off me before I break it,” I said calmly.

His hand fell away.

“Have we met?” His back stiffened.

When his name was called, Faulkner turned to look in the direction of the other remaining submissives.

He faced me again. “Wait here,” he said, and then returned to the center of the ballroom.

The bidding for the other submissives resumed. These were high stake games for the wealthy. The kind you needed a secret society for.

I headed in the direction I’d seen them take off with Rue, discreetly exiting the ballroom and disappearing into the stream of guests strolling down the hallway. Loosening my necktie, I discarded the plague doctor mask and snatched up a new disguise in case they came looking for me—a masquerade mask that someone had set on a table.

Just ahead, Rue was led by the Dom around a corner.

Following them, I noted the long line of rooms, each with a Roman numeral above its door. When I saw Rue and the Dom enter one of them, I held back, waiting in an alcove.

I continued walking when I saw the Dom withdraw from the room, leaving Rue inside.

Before I could reach her door, the guy who’d won her came around a corner with a couple of his friends.

Fuck.

This didn’t bode well.

With a nod to Bitcoin Asshole, I said, “Dungeon twenty. We’ll bring her in.”

He and his two friends ambled off in that direction.

That bought us a few minutes.

With them out of sight, I turned the doorknob and entered the dimly lit chamber.

My breath hitched at the striking vision of Rue in the center of the room, her masquerade mask off.

I should have bid on her. Even one night would be worth it. Then I reminded myself why I was here.

She was secured to the ceiling with a long chain, her arms raised above her head, her wrists captured in handcuffs. Shadows fell over her face and curvaceous body, her sex bare and inviting sin.

I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t the kind of man who took what he wanted, even as it was offered willingly.

Rue shifted position but her focus remained on the hardwood floor, just as she’d been trained. Her obedience would be treasured.

I wondered how she was feeling, what kind of emotions might be swirling through her mind.

I wondered if she understood the danger she was facing.
