“It’s good to see you,” I told her.

She pulled me into a tight embrace, her familiar perfume of white lilies reminding me of a time when we’d all been together, not scattered like we were now. It made me wonder if I was the only nostalgic one.

“How are you?” I said.

“Good, really good.”

I looked her up and down. “Motherhood agrees with you.”

“I’ve left the baby with Ethan. He’s already texted me twice.”

I chuckled.

“He’s an adorable dad. I shouldn’t complain.” Scarlet led me to the other side of the room. “How’s Rue?”

“Excellent.”

“I heard she excelled at Imperial.”

“She did. We’re just deciding who the best fit is for her.”

Her expression turned thoughtful.

I tried to read her. “Is there an issue?”

She gestured towards a side door and we walked over and stepped out into the hallway.

I looked around to make sure we could still talk privately.

She gazed up at me, concerned. “Faulkner’s here. We needed a reference for her,” she explained. “That’s how he found out.”

“That’s fine,” I reasoned.

“Richard conducted a background search on Rue. It included hearing how well she’d behaved under her last tutor.”

“Of course.”

Scarlet rested a hand on my arm. “It appears Rue belongs to him.”

“She belongs to herself.”

“She’s his sub.”

“Washis sub.”

“You warned Faulkner to cease her training?” She folded her arms.

I loved this about Scarlet, always looking out for everyone. I needed her on my side.

“He took her to Pendulum,” I said.

“Which is not ideal. I get that.”

I’d done the right thing by keeping Rue out of Pendulum. Bringing her here and ensuring her safety within the confines of Chrysalis. There was no guilt there.

“Shay,” Scarlet said. “He’s here to take her back.”

Fuck.
