He gestured to have me follow him down the hallway. Other than Cameron, De Sade was the only other person who was never intimidated by me. Even at my worst.

“What do you want?” I said.

“You closed down Enthrall? What’s going on?”

“I’m on it, Jake.”

“It would be great to get a heads-up if something is going down.”

“We’ve attracted a photojournalist,” I said. “I’m dealing with him.”

“Does he know about Chrysalis?”

“Not as far as I can tell.”

“Okay, good.” His eyes narrowed. “Is he after someone specific?”

“This is why you interrupted me?” I snapped

“No, actually.”

“What. Do. You. Want?”

“Sometimes you surprise me, Gardner.”

I folded my arms across my chest, showing my impatience.

“You never signed it?” he said.

I stared at him, trying to unscramble his words.

Jake’s expression was stoic. “The submissive contract. You just wroteto be determined.”

Those seeds of doubt I’d had in the breakfast room.

The gut feeling that rarely let me down.

“Names were put forward,” he said.

“What?”

“Dominic—”

“Dominic considered you?” I felt a stab of concern.

“My seniority does give me that honor, yes.”

We both knew how much Dominic hated me, too.

“What are you saying?” I snapped. “Dominic considered you for Rue’s master? What about your wife?”

“She likes to watch.”

I gritted my teeth together, trying to suppress my annoyance at Dominic.

The air grew heavy.

Here we were again. De Sade thrusting me into a sea of chaos.
