De Sade pushed up from the chair and strolled over. He was so damn tall, his athletic physique intimidating. His fingers trailed over my collar. A tug and my chain slinked to the ground near my feet.

Peering up at him, I remembered how he’d earned his name.

He leaned around me to grip the doorknob. “Come on,” he said, opening the door and taking my hand.

He led me out and away from that small chamber, down the long hallway.

“Shay asked me to watch over you in there,” he said. “He would never have left you without a guardian.”

We entered the breakfast room, crossing the short space to the glass door.

De Sade opened the door and gestured for me to go outside. “Tell him how you feel,” he said, and walked away.

Shay stood by the swimming pool, his hands tucked into his pockets, deep in thought.

“Sir!”

He pivoted to look at me. A kaleidoscope of emotions crossed his handsome face—his mask was off now.

Approaching him, I tried to read how he felt about me disobeying his order. He looked off toward the house as though contemplating it.

“Want some company?” I said, trying to sound casual.

“I can’t stay, Rue.”

I replayed his words in my head. “Why?”

His expression was now void of emotion.

“Is there someone else?” I asked.

“No.”

“Are you leaving to see someone?”

“Rue, there is no one else.” He stepped back. “Be safe, okay.”

“Wait.”

He closed the space between us, towering over me. I craved this connection between us that went so deep I couldn’t imagine where it ended.

His thumb brushed my lower lip. “One last kiss.”

“One last kiss?”

Shay’s strong hands cupped my face.

His mouth came down on mine with forceful passion. His tongue tangling, fighting for the control I gave him.

I sighed deeply into his mouth because this is what he did to me. He helped me find my center.

He drew my sighs into him, taking on my sins. Taking on all that was wrong with me. Yet again proving he was the best kind of man.

I was nudged away.

I felt a surge of pain at this sudden loss. This rejection.

“Run along. Go be slutty,” he said dryly.
