Once out of the car, Shay picked me up and carried me toward the house. He made me laugh with his hero swagger as he entered the house.

It was swift and sure, his hands on me like a man on fire. He shoved me against the wall in a passionate frenzy.

Shay undid his belt, unzipped his pants, and lifted me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist and felt the pressure of him against me.

I cried out at his first thrust, desperate for more.

He banged me against the wall, both of us gasping and clawing at each other’s bodies, like we were drowning and coming up for air. Like fucking was the only act that might save us.

His hips fiercely pounded me, my body responding by opening for him—my heart welcoming his brand of darkness. His control caused my body to become slack as he flew us into the stratosphere.

It was hot and heavy and frantic—both of us stealing orgasms in a frenzy.

He lifted me suddenly, moving us over to the kitchen table and fucking me there, too, before carrying me effortlessly over to the couch. We rolled onto the plush rug in the center of the room, moving together more slowly this time, gliding against each other.

Until we were finally sated and breathless and content.

Shay rolled off me, dragging me into a hug. We lay still, catching our breath. I rested my head on his chest, hearing his heartbeat, feeling safe in his arms.

“Warm enough?” he asked.

“Your body is like a furnace,” I said. “So yes.”

He kissed the top of my head, and his lips remained pressed against me as though this was his way of saying he was glad I was with him.

I took a deep breath, feeling peaceful. “This is paradise.”

“Because you’re here.”

I heard the rhythmic woosh of waves on the sand.

“Let’s surf tomorrow?” he said.

“I’d like that.”

“We’ll order in everything you need,” he said. “That way you can stay here for the rest of the week if you want.”

“I’d like that, too.”

“If you change your mind and want to go back to Chrysalis,” he said, “I can take you. You know that.”

I moved my head to look up at him. “You are my Chrysalis.”

That made him smile.

He dragged his fingers through his beard, his expression thoughtful.

Finally, he said, “It wasn’t what you wanted in the end?”

“I’m evolving. Finding myself.”

“It’s possible to lose yourself all over again. Life is like that.”

“Were you going to leave without saying goodbye?”

“Honest answer?”

“Yes.”
