“The book.”
“No, but I saw the movie.”
“Cole has been giving that book to subs as reading material.”
“How is this relevant?”
“At the end of the novel, Odette is so broken-hearted that her master has left her, she asks for permission to kill herself.”
“Not in the movie, though, right?”
“Can’t remember.”
“That’s fucking dark.”
“It really is.”
“Why would Cole give anyone that book to read?”
“He wants to see how they will react to that part of the story. He wants to know how stable they are.”
“If they relate to O, they can’t stay at Enthrall?”
He shrugged. “Have no idea what goes on in his mind. Nor do I want to.”
“Are you saying I might be…?”
“Unstable.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I snapped. “I was having…”
“Fun?”
“Yes, Richard, I needed to let my hair down.”
“Shay, it’s a joke. Why are you so serious all the time?”
Maybe I was in a bad mood because I’d lost Rue—and quite possibly my job.
“We returned Rue Asher’s membership fee,” he said. “Admin error. She didn’t need to pay.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Thought you should know.”
I could hear the familiar slicing of blades cutting through the air. Off in the distance a helicopter was approaching fast.
Maybe that was my punishment. I was going to become fodder for a billionaire looking for an idiot to land on. Or maybe Cole would accidently set down on Richard’s Audi which would provide no end of entertainment.
My past had caught up with me.
My talent, which was my willingness to sacrifice everything for Chrysalis, was also my weakness, apparently.
Richard shielded his face from the blast of air. “Always a dramatic entrance.”
Cole’s expertise was impressive. He navigated the helicopter toward a smooth landing, setting the chopper down.
Here came the one man confident enough to eviscerate me.
