“I’m sorry I left like that,” I said. “Forgive me.”
“Was it me?”
“Never. You would have lost the land.”
“I’d have lost a fucking planet for you.” He smiled. “You’re okay?”
“No. Because I miss you.”
He rested his palm over his heart. “Me, too.”
“Shay, I didn’t want to be the person who ruined your future.”
“You are my future.”
His words resonated like a dream I’d been too scared to hope for.
“I couldn’t get there,” he said. “Couldn’t let you in. I couldn’t be the man you wanted.”
“I’ve wanted you from the first second I saw you.”
“I’m…broken, Rue.”
“You’re like the rest of us, then? Aren’t we all a little beaten up? I will always look up to you. So many people do. I hope you see it. See how important you are to so many people.”
“You deserve happiness.”
“You’re really here because of me?” I held my breath.
“You inspire me to be a better man,” he said. “To face my demons.”
“We can face them together.”
“If you still want me…”
I ran and leaped on him.
He caught me and my arms went around his neck, my legs wrapping around his waist.
I kissed him so damn hard, showing him how much I’d missed him.
Our kiss deepened; nurturing and fierce and tender and as our tongues caressed. We were sharing what we needed to tell each other: That we had found our person. The one we’d been destined to meet.
We were saving each other in our own crazy way.
Finally, I pulled away. “I need to get home and get out of these scrubs and take a shower.”
He gave me a provocative smile. “Want some company?”
“I would love that.”
“My ride’s gone.” He looked skyward and then turned back to me. “Looks like you might be stuck with me.”
I beamed back at him.
“Rue, I have so much to tell you.”
“I can’t wait to hear it all.” I offered my hand to him, feeling the strength of his grip. “I want to show you my place.”
