We headed into the elevator and rode it down to the ground level.

We walked out of Cedars hand-in-hand and for the first time in forever I felt like his equal, this beautiful and complicated man who’d protected me right from the start.

Now, it was time for me to nurture him.

A Few Days Later

Cameron Cole stood nearby, his hands in his pockets, already in doc mode.

This had once been his permanent office back when he’d run his psychiatric clinic out of this impressive Beverly Hills space.

“Not sure this is necessary,” I said, walking around the room. “But Henry thinks this will be good for me, and Rue agrees.”

“I’m glad,” said Cameron.

“She’s forgiven me for interfering in her life.”

“You did what you believed was right. It was generous of you to pay off her contract.”

“Things are really good between us now.”

“You’re great together, Shay.”

His armchair sat in the center of the room and there was another high-backed chair opposite his.

Was I ready for this session?

“I suppose.”

“Waking up…breaking down and breaking out. It fucking hurts.”

“A doctor who swears…I like it,” I said. “That’s where you got the name for Chrysalis?”

“Positive disintegration—like the metamorphosis of a caterpillar. The breakdown is growth.”

“Wow.”

“Let’s go meet your true self.” He gestured tothechair.

I hesitated to sit.

“Do you miss it?” I asked. “All of this?”

“Yes.”

I offered a sympathetic smile. “What made you choose psychiatry in the first place?”

“The brain is the most complex puzzle to solve.”

And he loved puzzles. “Right.”

“The office is closed. No one will bother us.”

“Are you still consulting here?”
