“Is that so?”

“I glanced at my watch. “How long is this going to take?”

“You have to be somewhere?”

“I’m taking up your time.”

“My time belongs to you today.”

My foot bounced with the sudden tension I was feeling in Cole’s presence. “I’m a crap patient. Sorry.”

“Let’s try some hypnosis.”

I gave him an amused look. “Bit hokey for you.”

“Close your eyes.”

I settled back, doing what he asked, squeezing my eyelids closed, just going along with it.

Outside the window I heard the sounds of traffic.

Cole spoke up. “I know a little about what you went through. I was there for a brief time.”

“I know.”

“I never got as close to the mountains of Afghanistan.”

My throat tightened with the mention of the place. “They dominate the landscape.”

“I hear the wildlife is something?”

“It is.”

“What kind of animals roam there?”

“So many. Like the wildcats. They look like the most pissed off animal on the planet. Birds you’ve never seen anywhere.” I shook my head. “When you’re camouflaged, they can get really close.”

Cole began counting me down and down and down.

Three. Two. One.

His voice trailed off in the background as he guided me under.

Deeper.

And deeper.

Taking me all the way back.

My breathing slowed and I felt strangely sleepy.

“Tell me more.” Cole’s voice sounded distant.

“So much to see.”

“Tell me about that day,” he said. “Visibility was low.”

Henry would have told Cameron that. “We were caught in a sandstorm.”
