I suddenly saw a blur of movement and slammed on my brakes, reacting to the shadows within a line of trees.
A black Labrador puppy pranced around Cameron’s feet.
Cameron and I held each other’s gaze.
There was a time seeing this man would have an effect on me altogether different than what I felt now. His presence would stir a multitude of emotions. Some expected. Some not. And once he left my sight, his presence would linger not only in my head but in my heart.
Lowering my window, I called over, “You got a dog?”
He glanced down at the pup. “Mia wanted one for Raif. What are you doing in the neighborhood?” He peered past me through my window at Rue in the passenger seat. His quizzical gaze turned back to me. “Is she why you changed your mind?”
“Something else came up.”
“Come inside. Let’s catch up.”
Hanging out with Cameron had been one of the more remarkable experiences of my life. I missed it. But tonight wasn’t a good time to fill that void. I had a problem that needed solving.
“You’re not leaving without at least saying hi,” insisted Cameron.
I put the Rover in park and glanced over at Rue. “Stay here.”
I got out and shut the car door. When I reached Cameron, I gave him a warm hug and he patted my back with affection. I guided him away from the car so Rue wouldn’t overhear.
“Where’s your security detail?” I asked.
Cameron seemed to think on it.
I felt a stab of annoyance. “You sent him home?”
“It’s his anniversary.” Cameron waved it off. “Anyway, thanks to you it’s like Fort Knox in there.”
“Yes, but you’re out here.”
“How’s the beach house?”
“Fantastic. Thank you for letting me crash there.”
“That’s what it’s for.” Cameron looked over at my car. “You’re not going to introduce us?”
“I made a mistake bringing her here.”
“Oh?” He peered through the windshield to study her. “Who is she?”
“Rue.” I lowered my voice. “She’s from Majestic.”
“Oh, I like them over there.”
“She’s not their most well-behaved submissive,” I mused.
“Is she wearing anything beneath that trench coat?”
“Yes, actually.”
I watched his expression to see if my lie escaped detection.
“Did you come from Chrysalis?” he asked.
The puppy leaped onto my leg.
