“Hotel?”
“Too vulnerable.”
Mia appeared in the doorway and made her way toward us. “Shay.”
She held out her hands to take mine and leaned in to kiss my cheeks—one at a time, European-style. Her perfume wafted around us like a fresh summer breeze. Her blonde hair was tied back. Even without make-up she was breathtaking.
She looked over at the car.
“Her name’s Rue,” I explained.
“Introduce me!” said Mia.
“We’re leaving. I have to find somewhere for her to stay.”
Mia looked surprised. “Did something happen to her?”
“It’s complicated.”
“But she’s okay?” Mia’s voice was laced with concern.
“She’s fine.”
“Come in,” she said, gesturing to Rue. “Tell her to come in, too. We can all talk about it.”
“I don’t think you should formally meet.”
Confusion flashed over Mia’s face. She looked to Cameron for clarification, and then turned back to me. “You’re welcome here anytime,” she said. “But you know that.”
Cameron handed Mia the puppy’s leash. The small dog pranced around her feet.
Mia glanced at Cole, realizing that was her cue to let us talk privately. She gave a nod of understanding as she led the puppy away.
“It was good to see you,” she called back.
Mia went inside the house, leaving the door ajar.
Cameron gestured toward the Rover. “Faulkner’s making risky moves.”
A discomforting thought popped into my head. “You didn’t set this entire charade up, did you?”
Cameron looked surprised. “What?”
“Tricking me into getting a new submissive?”
“When have I ever interfered in anyone’s life like that?”
“Seriously?”
Like when he sent Scarlet to France to spend time with Danton Belfort because he knew she needed time away in Europe. Knew time with Danton might save her life…and it did.
Or like when he hired Mia to work at Enthrall, manipulating Richard into dating her. Before he finally realized he wanted her for himself. Cut to them living happily ever after in this ridiculously large mansion. With a dog. And a child. And enough domestic drudgery to lose a hard-on.
He did seem happier, though. So there was that.
“No, I have no knowledge of the woman waiting in your car.” He narrowed his sharp focus on Rue. “Though if you give me five minutes with her, I’ll gain some insight.”
“That’s not why I’m here,” I snapped.
