Cameron and Henry had a love-hate relationship. But as brothers, they always came through for each other. They were opposites. Henry had thrown himself into running Cole Tea as CEO, which had always been the plan. Cameron managed the company’s philanthropic enterprises here and abroad. With them at the helm the business continued to thrive.

Their acumen was a resource I’d used in the past with my fledgling business CloudSource—the one that had never gotten off the ground. I was just too damn busy at Enthrall.

The practical side of security suited me better.

Heading back toward the car, I threw a wave at Cole.

Cameron called after me. “Faulkner will come for her.”

“I know.”

“Start strategizing,” said Cameron.

“Already on it.” I opened my car door and rejoined Rue.

“Who’s that?” she asked.

“The kind of man who can dissect your brain while you’re still alive.” I navigated the Rover back toward the iron gate.

“Sounds painful.”

“That’s why we’re driving away,” I said. “To save you from that ordeal.”

The iron gate swung open before us.

Iparked curbside a few houses down from Cameron’s place, trying to come to a decision.

He was right. No one could offer protection the way I could. Rue could stay with me temporarily.

I headed for Malibu.

Along the Pacific Coast Highway, I glanced over at Rue. “Warm enough?”

She’d folded her arms across her chest. “Are we just going to drive around all night?”

“No, that’s not the plan.”

“Just take me home.”

“You forgot to tell me the house is being sold?” I asked, glancing over at her.

She glowered at me. “How about asking if there’s somewhere I want to go?”

“We are not going back to Pendulum.”

“At a friend’s, then.”

“Do you really want staff from Pendulum turning up on your girlfriend’s doorstep? They are looking for you. There’s no doubt.”

I’d noticed the silver Lexus following us a while back, and now the car no longer discreetly tailed us. The driver was flashing his lights for me to pull over.

Faulkner had not only inserted a tracker into Rue’s collar but somewhere else on her.

At least I hoped it was him.

I’d implemented driving maneuvers to shake off any car that might have followed us from the club. I never would have driven to Cole’s place if I’d suspected we were being tracked.

“Who gave you that watch?” I flashed Rue a wary glance.
