“But you can at Pendulum?”
He stepped closer so we were face to face. “What the hell were you thinking?”
I knew there was no avoiding the truth. “I was asked to extract Rue.”
“And you’re taking Rue to this phantom friend?”
“How long have you known me?” I said. “I have better shit to do than this.”
“I need to speak to her.”
“Not a good idea.”
Faulkner’s jaw tightened. “I want to hear it from her that she’s okay.”
“I was merely asked to extract her. That’s all I’ll say.”
“She’s above the age of consent.”
I straightened my back. “Pendulum? What the hell wereyouthinking?”
“No one enters without it being fully explained so they know what to expect.” He narrowed his focus. “You’ve played just as fucking hard.”
“We’re old enough to know our limits and the limits of others. Rue’s still learning.”
He clenched his teeth. “I took her there for her sake.”
“I’m sure Majestic appreciates that.”
“They know?” He looked concerned. “How?”
I turned to walk away from him.
“I’m not letting you drive away with her,” he said. “Rue’s my responsibility.”
Rue threw a friendly wave at him through the window.
“Does she look threatened to you?” I asked.
“You would do the same,” he said, softening his tone. “Make sure she’s safe. You wouldn’t let some asshole wander into Chrysalis and kidnap her.”
“She came willingly.”
“I don’t know that unless I talk with her,” he bit out.
“You know my reputation.”
“Do I? It’s all super-secretive at Enthrall.Exclusive. Impossible to get into.”
“Kaison, your connection to Pendulum sets you apart.”
“Is that why I’m not permitted to join Chrysalis?”
“That, and your cocaine habit.”
He looked pissed off and then relented. “What kind of man would I be if I let you drive off with her?”
“Someone who gets this situation.”
