“You’re there for submissive training?”

“Yes. I signed a contract to keep me there for a month.” I stared off and followed the flight of a seagull. “It’s impossible to break it. It’s at least one hundred K.”

“That doesn’t sound right.”

“It was the only house that would take me.” I raised my chin. “Enthrall wouldn’t even consider me.”

His frown deepened. “Don’t move in with Faulkner.”

I stared off toward the ocean. “Your place is beautiful.”

“Actually, it’s not mine.”

“You rent?”

“It belongs to a friend. I’m staying here while I…find somewhere else to live.”

“These are not your things?”

“My stuff is in storage. All this furniture comes with the house.”

“Are you divorcing?”

“No.”

It was impossible not to crush on this guy. The way he kept that wall up. Not letting me close. As though protecting me from what lay behind that steely glare.

He shrugged. “My last relationship didn’t work out.”

“What was her name?”

“Jake.” He slid into an endearing smile as though amused at my misconception.

Somewhere in the far reaches of my addled mind I recalled Kaison mentioning Shay broke hearts. Also, that Shay took on submissives.

“Bi?” I asked softly.

“Yes.”

“Is Jake in the scene?”

“Yes.”

“So you’ve also had female submissives?”

A devilish bite of his lip. “Yes, of course.”

It was the way he spoke those words, like the vibration of his tone was an invitation.

“You’re into pain?” I asked.

“Especially while driving on the 405.”

I laughed at that. Everyone in this city hated that congested freeway.

“You?” he said.

“Just endless pleasure,” I admitted.
