She wrapped the towel around her body, then rose onto her toes and looked out the window. “People can see in?”

“Exactly.”

The kettle whistled just in time. I brewed two mugs of tea.

Within minutes, I’d buttered four slices of toast and slid a plate with two of them over to her.

Rue joined me at the kitchen’s central island, blowing on her drink to cool it.

She had too many freckles to count. It would be easy to try, to just stare at her face. Maybe lean over and kiss a few. Nip her ear. Tip up her chin and move my lips over her naturally pouty mouth.

Sink my teeth into her neck.

“Do I have something on my face?” she said, breaking my fantasy.

“A crumb.” I touched my chin to show her where that non-existent crumb could be found on her blushing cheek.

I reminded myself that she was sacred, a female to be worshipped from afar—not someone to fantasize about.

“Shall I drive you back to Majestic after breakfast?” I asked.

“Okay.”

“You don’t seem happy about it.”

“They’re conservative.”

“How?”

“Carrie believes in easing us into the scene. Nothing too intense.”

“What kind of intense are you looking for?”

She gave me an amused glance. “You met me at Pendulum.”

I changed the subject. “Where do you live when you’re not at Majestic?”

“I was staying there for training and then I was getting my own place.”

“That’s good.” I sipped my tea. “Has your dad’s house already sold?”

“Yes, not long ago.”

“So, you were in denial?” I asked, because that’s where she’d had me take her first.

“I still have the key.”

She missed her father—I could see that.

“Once it’s sold you can’t go back,” I said softly. “Rue, your dad’s not there. Have you ever thought about grief counseling?”

“No, have you had therapy?”

“Me? No, I don’t need it. I just don’t think about what haunts me.”

“Something haunts you?”

I diverted our conversation. “You’re okay to go back to Majestic?”
