I turned in my seat to look at him. At his beautiful, rugged face. At the man who made me feel seen. I imagined he’d do anything to see his submissive flourish.

“I know you like me.”

Shay went to say something, as though finally ready to admit his attraction.

Daring emotions shimmied brilliantly between us.

Fading with the passing seconds.

“Why not me?” I whispered.

“That’s not what this is.”

“It’s you getting a favor lined up from Carrie in case you need it.”

He looked amused. “You can be sure I don’t need anyone’s help.”

“Then what is this?”

“Why does it have to be something?”

“What does that mean?”

“You’ve probably been searching for a safe space to explore your predilections.”

“How do you know that?”

He hesitated and then said, “I recognize myself in you.”

I needed a few seconds to recover from this profoundness.

“Why can’t we stay in touch?”

He raised his hand to wave to Carrie. “This is what it’s like to have a man place your needs above his. The world can be a good place. Not everyone is in it for themselves.”

“I’m never going to see you again, am I?”

Shay reached for the door handle, hesitated and glanced back over at me. “It doesn’t mean you’re forgettable.”

“I don’t want to say goodbye.”

“Honestly, I’m not the kind of guy you date. I’m the kind you call when your boyfriend’s being an asshole and needs to be taught some manners.”

“Or when you need to bury a body.”

“Hope that’s not a rumor.”

“Maybe it is.”

“Only in the line of duty.” He winked.

His look sent a shiver through me.

Carrie tapped on his window, snatching away his attention.

Stealing him from me.

Shay exited the car and left me sitting in the passenger seat. I felt a wrenching in my stomach at the loss of his presence.
