“Sure. As long as you agree to stay away.”
He studied me, maybe to see if I was serious about the money. Maybe he was wondering if he could get more. A lawsuit we could handle. We’d win, of course. Darryn had trespassed and we’d captured his entry on our security footage.
He’d long been intrigued by our club and his zoom lens could do a lot of damage. But he was the kind of man you could pay off.
“You’ll have to sign an NDA,” I told him.
“Where’s the fucking pen, mate?” He smirked.
A nurse burst through the curtain. “Mr. Amara,” she said brightly, her face instantly familiar.
It was Rue, looking as vibrant as I remembered, her full figure curvy in her dark blue scrubs. She had her hair tied back in an unruly ponytail. aby
Her face fell when she saw me.
Then she blushed.
Refocusing her attention back on Darryn, she spoke to him about his wrist. Something about him only sustaining a strain, the X-ray report revealing nothing broken.
I couldn’t take my eyes of Rue while she talked with Darryn. She had the kind of beauty that drew unwanted stares.
How long had it been? Three weeks? Yet it had been easy to recall her freckles and the way her pouty mouth quirked up when she was amused. The memory of her was imprinted on my brain like a photograph.
Now, her lips were curved in a not-so-amused smile, her expression annoyed as she gazed at me.
In truth, she was more breathtaking than anyone’s mind could possibly recall.
This bright, young woman I’d rescued from Pendulum a few weeks ago was apparently flourishing here. Rue had come across as a thrill seeker. It made perfect sense to find her working in an ER, enjoying the adrenaline rush.
“Do you know each other?” asked Darryn.
Probably because Rue’s blue eyes were throwing daggers my way.
“Hey,” I greeted her warmly.
She ignored me and turned back to Darryn. “I’ll bring your discharge papers for you to sign.” She laid an advice sheet on the table next to his gurney and glided it his way. “How do you two know each other?” she asked, making it sound casual.
“We go way back,” said Darryn.
“Like hell we do,” I mumbled.
Darryn raised his wrist to show her. “Do friends do this to each other?” There was nothing to see.
She glared at me and turned back to Darryn. “He tried to ruin my life, too.”
“Enough!” I shot to my feet.
“Whoa!” Darryn’s glare hopped from me to her and back again.
“Are you in any danger from this man?” Rue asked him while pointing at me.
“You tell me, sweetheart.”
“For God’s sake,” I snapped. “Darryn, get out of that gown and get dressed. I’ll drive you home.”
He looked amused. “You just want to see where I live so you can send me a restraining order.”
“You’re not as stupid as you look,” I said.
