Seeing her again felt like a miracle.
Rue’s ID badge had RN after her name. “You’re here permanently?”
“You catch on quick.”
My eyebrow arched at her sarcasm. “So do you.”
“Fuck you.”
I threw a calm wave to a security guard who was watching us. Rue threw him a fake smile to let him know she was fine. Though one wrong word from me and I was sure that would change. She’d probably enjoy watching me being escorted out.
Walk away.
Forget her.
Say goodbye.
I didn’t need any more drama to add to this day. Yet all I could do was admire the woman standing before me. Admire her bravery and her ability to take on what was clearly a challenging specialty.
I imagined Rue was an anchor in this sea of chaos.
For me, she was impossible to turn away from.

I’d dropped her off in Glendale and then driven away, though my thoughts had turned back time when I’d allowed myself those rare moments to think of her.
Her jaw tightened. “Imagine my surprise when I arrived at a private party at Chrysalis with some friends, and I was turned away at the door.”
“That would have been embarrassing.” I shrugged. “Wouldn’t try that again.”
“Shay Gardner!”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“Clearly now’s not the time.”
“I’m not allowed back into Pendulum either!”
“Consent is dubious there.”
“You do realize that’s my kink.”
That sounded vaguely familiar. I think she’d told me that while staying with me overnight. Still, she didn’t know the consequences of what that meant. Not really.
“If you’re going to explore you must do it in a place that has boundaries,” I said. “Majestic is a good fit. The place protects you from exploitation, so all the pleasure flows your way.”
“You have prevented me from entering any club.”
I made it look like I was trying to recall if that was indeed true.
