“I assumed…”
“You assumed?” he said flatly.
“I’m here to impress you.”
“If you want to do that, talk about Chaucer. Quote Marcus Aurelius.”
“The Roman emperor?”
“Yes.”
“I remember reading something about him that creeped me out.”
“You don’t think he was one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived?”
“Why is this relevant?”
“It’s relevant if I say it is, Rue.”
“I’ve signed the forms. Doesn’t that mean I’m in?”
“It means you’ve made yourself known to me.”
It was the way he’d spoken those words that elicited a sensation inside me like a kundalini awakening.
“Your work and personal life have been arranged so that you can devote a week to us?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Any health issues you failed to mention?”
“No, nothing like that.” I hesitated and then said, “No, sir.”
“Blood work is good,” he continued to read. “No sexual diseases.” He just came out and said it without embarrassment.
I watched his expression turn dark.
He looked up at me. “You trained as a submissive at Majestic?”
“Yes, sir.”
He glanced back down at the file.
“What does it say?” I asked.
His frown deepened. “How long were you at Pendulum?”
“A few hours.”
“You don’t commit well to submissive training, Rue.”
“Have you spoken with Shay about me?”
Richard’s glare became intense.
“Master Gardner,” I said, correcting myself.
“What can he add?” He slapped the folder closed.
