Even though he’d warned me it was too late.
I’d done everything wrong. Misread the room. The interview had begun as soon as I’d stepped over the threshold, only I’d failed to see that.
This…this was how I was meant to begin.
I was unsure of how much time passed. Ten minutes, maybe? My body was reacting as though unaware I was failing—arousal soothing my sense of doubt.
I’d have stayed like this for hours if ordered.
“Rise.” Richard’s voice broke through the quiet.
Pushing up, I avoided eye contact with him and hesitated as though these last moments could undo my mistake.
If I could just find the right words.
But I couldn’t.
I headed for the door and clutched the handle, turning back to him. “I liked Canterbury Tales.”
“Chaucer’s best-known works,” he said approvingly. “So you have read him.”
“Marcus Aurelius not so much.”
Richard gave a nod. “Impress the all-mighty one and you’re in.”
Who?
“One chance.”
My mouth went dry. I had a feeling I knew who he was talking about. The one man everyone respected. And everyone feared.
A man who could destroy a submissive.
Outside in the hallway, Shay was waiting.
He tucked his phone in his pocket. “How did it go?”
“He wants me to see…”
Shay gestured for me to follow. “On your knees. You’ll crawl the rest of the way.”
“Is it him?” asked Rue, looking around the eclectic chamber.
“It’s him,” I said.
Richard agreed it was best we have the ultimate assessment. Make sure Rue was ready for the unique level of intensity she’d requested.
Only it wouldn’t be in this manor.
I had just made the difficult decision to officially close Enthrall.
We’d begun locking the place down and were completing a rudimentary walk-through to make sure everything was secure.
I wasn’t going to look at it like we’d lost this battle. It was more about us coming back stronger. More secure. Enthrall had evolved into an extraordinary establishment and we had to change with the times.
Once the iron gate was constructed, we’d reopen.
Enthrall had once been a well-kept secret. A few famous clients had hinted of its existence and now Enthrall’s exclusivity had become compromised.
