I had access to the live security footage of the perimeter on my Smartphone—could check to see the way was clear before anyone arrived or left the manor.

“Will it happen here?” Rue broke the silence.

She waited in the center of the room on her knees, looking exquisite in that pink dress. Even though she wasn’t mine I was still proud to show her off.

Putting some distance between us, I leaned against the side of the Saint Andrews cross, reminiscing about what I’d done within these burgundy walls with De Sade.

The day before he’d gone back to Rylee.

I wouldn’t have chosen this room, but Cameron had told us to meet him here. Maybe he’d noted how much time I’d once spent in this chamber. It wouldn’t surprise me.

“Are you going to share me?” Rue whispered.

“Silence.”

I let my mind speculate as to what they would have done to her at Pendulum. It would have been the kind of experience no training could prepare her for. And Hillenbrand, that place would have destroyed her. Though something told me she wanted that.

Her self-destructive side needed protecting. She nursed the kind of pain that nudged her into making interesting decisions.

Rue bit her bottom lip as though sucking on a delicious thought.

Yeah, it’s not what you think.

This could be one of the most profound experiences of her life.

Because of him.

Cameron Cole strolled in with his usual intimidating presence, his gaze focusing on Rue as though that’s all it would take to get a feel on her. To read her soul.

I studied her, too. A redheaded goddess on her knees, lush locks falling over a freckled face. Too pretty, really. Too precious. Too fucking perfect for a man like me.

I liked it rough and could endure hours of passion with a lover. I’d probably break her on day one—in every conceivable way. Enough to have her blissed out but not enough to have her fall in love. Not when she saw the real me. The cold-hearted man who let no one in.

Though part of me could see the value in spending more time with her.

Her beauty was alluring.

The first time Rue saw Cole was at his palatial home in Beverly Hills. He’d probably not seemed intimidating, not with that puppy by his side and his easygoing nature, which she had observed from afar.

Here, Cole would be a different man.

Shrugging out of his jacket, he then removed his cufflinks, tucking them away in his pocket. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing muscled forearms. The way he removed his tie was all business—taking his time as though winding up a clock. All fine precision and mindful focus.

He swaggered around like he still owned this lion’s den.

As the founder and former director, his brilliance was still needed here. Cameron may no longer rule but his opinion remained sacred.

Over the years, I’d seen him tackle every conceivable situation. Take on every challenge without flinching.

He was the grand master of control.

I waited for Cameron to do his thing. Make sure Rue was ready.

“The gate will look good.” Cameron quirked a brow. “You made the right decision.”

“We have to have more security in place before we re-open.”

He nodded in agreement.
