Anger rose in my belly. “I was destined to fail.”

“Fail?”

“Did you enjoy it? Watching him put me in my place?”

“No. What makes you think that?”

“I thought…”

“You exited the building respectfully. You were calm and remained contained considering the circumstances.”

“That was a test?”

“Everything is.”

“I didn’t tell either of them that I saw you at Pendulum,” I said bitterly.

“They know I was there, Rue.”

“They were waiting to see if I betrayed you?”

“Discretion is essential.”

My hands were shaking. “But you’re taking me home?”

I felt like my emotions were taking a wild ride on a roller coaster.

Shay reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone, entering a text. I tried to read it, but he stopped me with a warning look. Then he went back to sending more messages.

“Let me out here,” I said, suddenly feeling the need for air.

“Relax,” he said calmly.

Leaning back, I resigned myself to the fact he had all the power. And each moment with him was precious.

And there was still Hillenbrand.

He glanced up from texting. “What’s going on in that mind of yours?”

His voice was a spark that ignited every cell in my body—our chemistry combustible.

When I didn’t answer, Shay shoved his phone back into his pocket.

“Turn around,” he ordered.

“Why?”

“I’ve not seen any evidence you’re an elite submissive.’”

I spun round so that my back was to him, every nerve on edge.

Glancing over my shoulder, I saw a strip of black silk in his hand.

He secured it around my head, covering my eyes, giving it a tug to ensure nothing could be seen through it.

I heard a soft rustle of movement.

It had sounded like he was sitting back where I couldn’t touch him.
