I could spend hours pressing my lips to those delicate freckles like a mad man chasing the stars.

“You look beautiful,” I said at last.

If Dominic had tried to appeal to my earthy side, he’d succeeded by dressing her like this—though at 9:00 A.M. it seemed ridiculous. I’d been fighting an erection since arriving.

“Are you cold?” I asked, admiring the way her naked shoulders looked in that bodice but at the same time concerned the air-conditioning might be set too low.

She blinked as though struck by my concern, her face lighting up. “I’m fine.”

No, she wasn’t.

I rose, shrugging out of my jacket, and made my way down to her end of the table. I wrapped it around her shoulders and she slid her arms into the satin-lined sleeves, smiling up at me. It swamped her.

I went back to my chair and sat there feeling the distance between us. Dragging the contract over to me, I scanned the legalize all the way down to where my signature would have gone.

I nudged the fancy fountain pen away.

“I signed it,” Rue piped up.

“I can see that.”

“Dominic says any feelings we have this morning are natural.”

Dominic had told her that, but the message was for me. “What else did he say?”

“To share something personal with you so we can get to know each other better.”

I reached for a slice of toast and mulled over whether I was in the mood for these mind games. I bit into the slice, the taste of butter and bread hitting the mark. I dabbed my mouth with the napkin.

I really was hungry.

“Shall I go first?” she said softly.

Lifting the teapot, I poured hot liquid into a teacup. “They don’t have mugs?”

“He told me you’d say that.”

I lifted the cup to my mouth and carefully took a sip. The golden liquid tasted refreshing. We were drinking Cole tea—I’d imbibed enough of the stuff to recognize its luxurious flavor.

“This is fucking ridiculous,” I said, lifting the cup like an idiot with my pinky out.

Three gulps and it was empty.

Looking over at Rue, I couldn’t stand the space between us. It was like we were royals or something, or we couldn’t bear to be close. Whoever had made this a thing back in the day deserved one of those bullets I’d wasted this morning when my aim was off.

I got up and brought my plate over to her end of the table, along with my annoyingly small teacup, and set it down. “Mind if I join you?”

She looked amused. “No, of course not.”

I went back for the teapot and poured the light brew into her cup to refill it. With a nod from her, I added milk.

Sitting much closer, we ate breakfast together.

“Were you working this morning?” she asked.

I didn’t want to lie. “I needed to get a couple of things done.”

“Anything I can help with?”
