His expression turned hopeful.

I peered inside and read the words on a strip of paper:

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out

how far one can go.”

“Sounds familiar,” I said.

“A quote by T.S. Eliot.”

“Hikers left it to encourage us?”

He swallowed hard. “When I dropped Reese off at the airport for her flight to Chile, she was wearing a T-shirt with this exact quote.”

As I processed that, I reread the profound words.

“They got hold of old photos, maybe?” he reasoned.

“It’s not a coincidence.”

“No,” he said softly. “I agree.”

I blinked at him, stunned he hadn’t seen that her wearing this on a T-shirt had been a foreshadowing, an indication that Reese had an adventurous spirit, that she was the kind of character who might just up and disappear on a dangerous exploit.

Henry might not have seen this in her back then because he’d been young himself, unable to sense this woman might fly off without considering those left behind.

Only to turn up years later in a place like this.

With his memory now jarred, I wondered if more clues might become apparent.

Outside, a rustling startled me.

Henry didn’t seem to hear it. He just kept staring at that piece of paper like he’d seen a ghost.

I felt a sinking sensation in the pit of my stomach as I hurried outside to retrieve my kit.

It was gone.

I bolted back inside. “Did you bring in my backpack?”

Henry straightened and shook his head.

“I left it on the step.”

“You’re sure?”

“Of course!”

“Stay here.”

“Where are you going?”

He flew out the door without answering.

Fuck.

So stupid of me.
