I followed him outside. “I’m sorry!”

The medical kit is gone, too.

Something sinister had just happened.

Throat tight with dread, I waited in the doorway.

If anything happened to Henry, I’d never forgive myself.

I should help him.

But he’d told me to wait.

I stayed put, keeping an eye on his rucksack inside.

Reaching in my pocket, I checked for my iPhone, and then my hand slid down to grab the two-way radio, unclipping it and holding it before me with my finger poised to press the button. This was my lifeline to him.

Please be okay.

“Henry!” I called out.

I heard only silence.

Pressing my hand to my chest, I tried to slow my breathing and calm my racing heart.

A mosquito buzzed my face. Annoyed, I waved it away frantically.

Sweat trickled down my back and my brow was spotted with perspiration. My entire body felt damp from clamminess, causing my clothes to stick to my skin.

Henry suddenly emerged from the trees and I sucked in a deep breath of relief, securing my two-way radio onto my belt.

He nudged me back inside. “Well, it’s gone.”

Feeling crushed with embarrassment, I covered my face with my hands to hide my shame. “Someone stole it.”

I uncovered my face as Henry came closer. “You okay?” he asked.

“Not really.”

“I have enough supplies for two.” He gave a shrug. “This is one of the many unforeseen situations to prep for.”

“What about the medical kit?”

“I have one, too, including anti-venom. We’re all good.”

I stepped back. “Why didn’t you mention it?”

“Didn’t want to steal your thunder.”

“Well, my thunder just evaporated.” Another realization hit me. “My sleeping bag!”

“I’ve got you,” he said.

“How are you so calm?”

“I’m used to degradation.”

“What’s that?”
