And I needed to find Henry, who could be anywhere. My heart ached knowing that he was suffering alone.

The man’s weathered face showed his age to be around sixty. He had on a bright orange jacket, so a hunter, maybe?

“What are you doing out here?” he said with a Floridian lilt.

“Hiking.”

“Alone?”

“No. Please lower your gun.”

He lowered the weapon but kept it ready.

“I appreciate that,” I said, letting my arms fall to my sides.

“What’s yours?”

He glanced at his rifle as though to say, “I’m the one with the gun.”

Fucker.

Sucking in a deep breath, I said, “We’re meeting up with someone.”

“Who?”

“Her name’s Reese.”

His expression darkened.

“I’ve never met her,” I said, reading disgust in his expression. “I’m from L.A. I can’t wait to get back, to be honest. I’m a city girl, though I’m originally from Florida.”

“Where?”

“Miami.” I stepped forward. “You?”

“Naples.” He looked impatient. “I gotta get back to work.”

“What kind of work?”
