I pushed up. “If you’ll excuse me.”

I felt Reese’s gaze on my back as I walked away.

Lifting my watch, I sent off another message to Shay.

Shay: Ready.

Me: Helicopter extraction.

Shay: Clearance?

Me: Proven. 26°00′00″N 81°25′01″W

Shay: Got it.

Me: Tonight. 7 PM EST.

Shay: Confirmed.

That gave us less than one hour to arrive at the checkpoint.

We needed two thousand feet of clearance from the nearest landmass. The Bell had cleared it, but I’d need to confirm. We also needed to minimize disturbance of the wildlife.

I returned to the table and sat with the others.

Lotte would have no idea the boat was gone. I didn’t want her worried.

“Everything okay?” asked Reese, watching me carefully.

I focused on her. “We’re starving. Do you have veggie burgers?”

“On their way.” She relaxed a little. “Let me show you where you’ll sleep tonight.”

“Actually, I want to see the site after we eat,” I said. “That’s non-negotiable.”

“He wants to get right on it,” said Lotte. “This place is breathtaking.”

Reese sat back as she considered it.

Not suspecting this woman of foul play was challenging. She’d already proven what she was capable of.

Getting what she wanted would always be her end game.

Henry was showing remarkable patience.

I’d learned to read him; the cadence in his tone, the way he held himself. The distinguished way he interacted with everyone.

I knew once he settled in a little, catching up with Reese would be good for him.

Visiting the construction site this late in the day meant we’d arrive around 7:00 P.M. Maybe he wanted to explore the area under the guise of dusk.

I hated the idea that someone here had something to do with my kit’s disappearance. Even so, that sounded counter intuitive, since they needed Henry’s help.

Searching for it here wasn’t a good idea.

The fact Reese had left a T.S. Eliot quote for us in the hut felt like a mind-game.

Reading her was difficult even for someone like me who’d mastered the art of deciphering micro-expressions. In time, people like her revealed their true nature.
