She swapped a wary glance with Michael.

We walked out of earshot of him and Lotte.

“Well?” said Reese.

I followed her line of sight. “We can get an injunction. Slow it down.”

“You’ve been gracious.” Reese let out a long breath. “Considering how I got you here.”

“I’m a forgiving guy.”

She focused on the mounds of piping ready to be buried. “They only care about money.”

“Money’s important.” I towered over her. “If you had more, you could throw money at this. How many billionaires did you try before me?”

“None.” She looked vulnerable then, as though my bluntness hit harder than intended. “Forgive me, Henry. You were the ultimate sacrifice I had to make.”

“How honorable.”

“It hurt me, too.”

“Why did you send your daughter to tell me? It should have been you.”

“Lilly?” She flinched. “I couldn’t leave my team.”

“She’s just like you.”

That made her relax. “Lilly’s hoping to move to L.A.”

“Where is she now?”

“Here, in Florida. She wants to study biology at UCLA.”

“When did you get pregnant with her?” I asked.

“I don’t want to talk about it here.” She folded her arms protectively over her chest.

“I’m sure your dad would want to meet his grandchild.”

“Don’t.” Reese looked away. “That part of my life is behind me.”

All that time searching for her, and she’d moved on in another relationship. She’d gotten married, had a child, and even qualified as an anthropologist.

All while I’d been back in the States trying to pick up the pieces.

She rested her hand on my forearm. “I never stopped loving you.”

“If you love someone you don’t hurt them.”

“Never intentionally,” she said.

“We were young, I suppose.”

“You never stopped thinking about me?”

She’d like that. To believe all this time, I had waited for her.

Her tone softened. “You’re not married.”
