“Much deserved,” said Cameron. “Even if you had our head of security here tracking your every move on the SATCOM.”

I’d assumed as much. “I’d have done the same.”

Cameron peered out the window. “So would I.”

“By the way, I left the rental car at the edge of the preserve,” I told Shay.

“A Land Rover Discovery, right?”

They’d even kept tabs on my credit card activity. I’d hired the best so what did I expect?

“Consider it dealt with,” said Shay.

I couldn’t blame them. I was the golden child guiding a billion-dollar company through the twenty-first century. A lot counted on keeping me alive.

As the tension lifted, I felt the drag of exhaustion. Not even the tea could help me rally.

Seeing my past clearly for the first time, the shame I’d felt from what I thought I had done wrong back then was finally dissipating. My journey into the preserve had left me vindicated.

All this had also gotten me closer to one of the most remarkable women I’d ever met.

Charlotte.

“Get some sleep,” Cameron said softly.

I chose not to disturb Lotte by sharing the bed. I stayed in my seat, eyelids closing, body relaxing, drifting into unconsciousness—my thoughts finding refuge in the only person who had ever brought me solace.

Blinking awake, I peered out of the town car’s window to see we’d arrived outside Henry’s home.

When the jet had landed at Santa Monica airport, Cameron and Shay had headed off in one car and we had left in another.

“What time is it?” I asked sleepily.

“Three A.M.” He gave me an endearing smile.

I stretched. “Can your driver drop me off at my place?”

“Of course,” he said. “If that’s what you want.”

“You don’t want some alone time?”

He lowered his voice. “I have an NDA on my desk for you to sign.”

I blinked some more. “Oh?”

“Joking.” He elbowed me playfully. “I thought it might be nice to have some breakfast.”

“You don’t have to do this,” I whispered.

“I want to do this. Let’s go in. I can drive you home any time you want. Or arrange a car if you’d prefer.”

I sensed he was trying to be kind.

Also, he probably didn’t want to discuss anything in front of his chauffeur. Maybe he wanted to debrief me.

And not the fun type of debriefing, either.

Even though I was still wearing his boxers.
