I needed to go home so I could dress in my own clothes.

We just weren’t ready to be parted yet.

Or at least I wasn’t.

We ate a heartier breakfast than those few bites of profiterole that I’d found previously in his fridge.

While I brewed more coffee, I had fun watching Henry scramble eggs and make toast, move around his kitchen like he’d lived here forever—and acting like this was normal for us to prepare breakfast together.

We tucked into the fresh food, grateful not to have to eat another processed meal like the ones we’d eaten during our adventure.

Every precious moment I’d spent with him at the preserve was playing in my mind like a movie, and I suddenly had a flash of inspiration.

“I want to take you somewhere special,” I said. “Only I don’t have a car.”

“You’re okay going out like that?”

“No one will see me wearing your clothes.”

“Going to give me a clue?”

“It’s better to show you.”

He looked intrigued, and in less than a minute we were standing inside his impressive garage trying to decide which of his three cars to choose.

The Range Rover was so very him. There was also a silver Mercedes and a bright red Tesla Roadster.

I blinked at the choice. “I can’t believe these are all yours.”

“What are you in the mood for?”

“Any of them, and I’m driving,” I said.

“Want to take the Roadster?” He grabbed some keys from a lockbox and threw them in the air.

I caught them.

The red Roadster would be the flashiest car I’d ever driven. It was like something out of the future.

Henry pressed his thumbprint against the car door to unlock it. “Want the roof down?”

“Yes, please.” I leaped into the driver’s seat, inhaling that new car smell. “This is flashy for you.”

“I didn’t buy it.”

“Was it your mom?”

“Dad.” He settled into the passenger seat beside me. “I was happy with the Rover.”

With a press of his thumb, the engine started.

Carefully, I navigated the expensive car out of the garage and down the long driveway, turning onto the street. The car was responsive and the ride was smooth.

We took the 405 freeway.

Even at five in the morning, traffic remained heavy, but the outside lane allowed us to make good time to see the sunrise.

We made it to our destination in just over an hour.
