So far, Jen hadn’t shown she had any insight into that situation.

A small business could reverse engineer a major company and learn how to evolve. Every company had to contend with idea theft. It wasn’t new. It was, however, a royal pain in the ass.

“What are your thoughts on them?” I asked.

Jen started to answer, but then noticed Shay standing in the doorway.

“Now a good time?” he asked.

I motioned for him to come in. “Always a good time for you, Shay.”

Jen reached for the file on my desk.

I rested my palm on it. “Give me a day on this.”

“I’ll scan it—or whatever you need me to do.”

I shook my head. “Not yet.”

I watched as she walked out of the office, closing the door behind her.

“Go on.”

“His father was a medic. Died in an explosion in Afghanistan.” Shay leaned forward. “You want him to continue driving you but—”

“Until you have something more substantial.”

Shay couldn’t hide his frustration. “I’ll work on the timeline from when we were over there. Check for any crossover with his dad’s deployment.”

“Good plan.”

“Griffin has never once mentioned to you that his dad served in the military?”

I shook my head. “It’s unusual.”

Considering he’d been driving me around for months.

Shay crossed one leg over the other. “I’ve emailed you the report on Community Development. They’re set to build on the preserve in three days.”

“That doesn’t give us a lot of time.”

“What do you want to do?”
