“Slow them down.”
His frown deepened. “We can have a council member out there halt construction. Find an issue that needs resolving.”
I raised my hands in the air. “Don’t tell me any other details.”
He nodded. “How’s Lotte?”
I smirked at his subtle way of fishing. “Exceptional.”
“You guys are getting along?”
“She stayed over last night.”
Though we’d arrived home in the early morning, so it had made sense.
Admittedly, I hadn’t wanted her to leave.
Shay studied me. “Seeing Reese didn’t stir up any old emotions?”
His question was super private, but we’d been through a lot together.
“I’ve lived my entire life imagining what it would be like if I ever saw Reese again. I loved her once. Saw us getting married.”
But after what she had done to everyone, and her reasoning behind it, even with all the good she has done in the world I couldn’t get over it.
“Do you regret inviting her here?”
I shrugged.
“You’re only human.”
“Excuse me?” I said, grinning.
He smirked. “Superhuman.”
“Exactly.”
“What was it like? Seeing her again after all this time?”
“I felt nothing.”
“Yet with Lotte?”
I raised a hand. “Can you let me work through our friendship first? I get that she’s your dear friend, but we need some space from everyone crowding us.”
“Of course,” he said. “It’s just that we’re all blown away that you’re seriously dating a dominatrix.”
That hit harder than I expected.
“She left Chrysalis,” I said. “She’s not going back.”
He blinked at me, and then looked away.
My stomach clenched. “Richard let her go, temporarily. But she’s going to work as a therapist in Beverly Hills. Cameron offered her the job.”
Shay chewed on his lip.
“She’s not going back,” I repeated.
