“What was it like seeing her again?”

“Not as emotional as I’d feared.”

“How did she act toward you?”

“Cold, but reasonable.”

“Were you hoping for a romantic reunion?”

I shuddered. “Impossible.”

“I can see why.”

I rubbed my brow to ease the tiredness of the last seventy-two hours.

Visiting Chrysalis earlier and treating Lotte the way I had would go down as one of my worst mistakes. I had quite a few to compare it with.

Our brief spark had set off a wildfire that had burned out too fast.

“Let’s talk in the sitting room,” said Mia.

I raised a hand. “I don’t want this conversation shared.”

“Of course not.”

Mia was the kind of person you could trust with a secret. I’d always loved that about her.

We settled on the plush couch in their tastefully decorated living room. Pastel fabrics covered luxurious furniture. Other sophisticated touches were both homey and intimate, perfect for unwinding.

Mia had been the one to encourage me to leave Big Bear after my reclusive year. I owed her so much.

“Have you and Cameron returned to Chrysalis since you’ve been married?” I asked.

She set her mug on a coaster on the coffee table.

I read her reluctance. “You don’t want to answer?”

“We’ve attended a few parties.”

“You just watch.”

“We enjoy the erotic scene, yes.”

I’d asked Shay this same question about them back at the Edison when we’d had drinks over a month ago. The loyal bastard hadn’t given away anything.

“What was the deciding factor for Cameron leaving Chrysalis?”

“To run Cole Tea.”

I flashed a guilty grin. “Until I insisted I take over.”

“He wanted that for you,” she said. “It’s your birthright.”

“I was a bastard about it.”

“He admired your strength.” She lifted her mug and blew on the tea to cool it. “He took his own ego out of the equation. He’s happy for you.”

“He’s a good brother.”
