“Everything a man like Jake would want.”

“He’s married. And bi.” I studied Henry’s reaction. “Shay and Jake were lovers.”

Henry blinked at me. “That’s him?”

“Yes.”

“I only ever heard of him.”

“Well, now you’ve met him.”

“He played in the NFL?”

“Quite successfully.”

“Still an asshole.”

“He means well,” I said.

“Jake seemed familiar with my history.”

“Cameron and Shay have always been protective of what happened to you in Afghanistan.”

“It’s public knowledge.” He shrugged. “People were curious about Cameron’s brother. I get that.”

I closed the space between us. “Let’s start over.”

“In what way?”

“I wanted to give you space,” I said softly. “That’s why I didn’t call.”

Henry poured the Bollinger with the panache of a man who wasn’t a stranger to expensive brands.

He handed over a flute of sparkling champagne. “I hope you weren’t saving it for a special occasion.”

“This is a special occasion.”Because you’re here with me.

He took a deep breath. “I’ve cracked the code to our new formula.”

I gasped. “That’s brilliant, Henry! Yes, bubbly is called for to celebrate! Can’t wait to taste it.”

“I should have called before turning up out of the blue.”

“That’s too formal for us.”

“Really?” he said.

“You’re passionate. It’s what I love about you—”

“Don’t worry, you can’t chase me away with that word,” he said.

“What would scare you away?”

“Betrayal.”

“I would never—”

“I trust you with my life.” He set his glass down.
