I bit my lip nervously. “Is that a problem?”

“We have to give the tabloids something delicious.” He twirled me around.

“Reese seems happy.” I leaned back. “What were you toasting a moment ago?”

“I gave the land back to the preserve. They can’t build anything there.”

My body stiffened at that remarkable deal. He’d just solidified his connection to her.

Reese had already told me that, but she had apparently failed to mention to him I’d visited his home last Sunday.

Henry started to speak and then reconsidered. “Let’s talk later.”

“Can’t wait.”

“You’re going to have to trust me.”

“How are you going to respond to the article?”

“You’ll see soon enough.”

“Right.”

“You smell amazing. I’m going to bottle that scent and make a tea out of you.”

I tried to relax.

His fingers tightened around my hand. “Tell me about this job offer?”

“It’s at another club.”

Henry shot me a concerned look. “Not like Chrysalis?” He stopped turning. “You told me you were leaving the scene.”

I whispered, “I won’t make this difficult for you.”

“What do you mean?”

“There’ll be no public response from me. About us.”

“What are you saying?”

“I don’t like being shuffled through the rear entrance of a hotel. Forced to sit across the room. Handled by your muscle.”

“Shay?”

“I don’t like being considered a scandal.”

“Not here.” He shot a smile to someone at his table.

Probably Reese.

On my reaction he added, “I’m merely escorting her—which was your idea.”

“You could have refused.”

“You women are complicated.”

The husky tones of Neil Diamond faded.
