After hearing Reese follow me out, I kept walking and entered the first room I came to, trying to escape her. I found myself standing in an empty ballroom, half the size of the other one.
The door opened and Reese followed me in. “Something wrong?”
“I have to make a call.” Only my phone was still in my purse, which I didn’t have on me.
She didn’t seem to notice. “To be honest, I don’t usually mingle with this many people. And this dress cost a small fortune.”
“It’s gorgeous.”
“Henry bought it for me.”
I glanced at her charm bracelet, and she noticed.
Looking gleeful, she said, “It’s hard to break a relationship off, isn’t it?”
“What do you mean?”
“You and Henry are not together anymore.”
The blade was invisible, but hurt just the same. “That’s none of your business.”
“It is.”
“How do you mean?’
“On the way here, Shay and Henry were talking about deflecting a major PR scandal. I’m guessing that’s you?”
Cruel of you to undermine what we have.
Had.
“Being accepted into a family like theirs comes with expectations,” she added.
“I’m well aware.”
“Is it true, you’re a dominatrix?”
She used it against me like a weapon.
Reese gave a snide smirk.
“You have no idea what it is I do.”
“I can imagine.” She pulled a face. “Do you wear a skimpy bodice and stuff?”
“Henry is fine with it.”
“Then why did they arrange to have you come in through the rear of the hotel?”
“Get over yourself.”
“You need to show me respect,” she bit out.
The kind of respect reserved for a Cole. She didn’t say it—didn’t need to.
“You hurt him, Reese. Years later you summon him to Florida without an explanation. That’s what disrespect looks like.”
“I’m trying to save the planet.” She scoffed. “Inmyprofession, I’m revered.”
