Shay pulled out his phone and read a text. His expression turned dark.
I stepped closer. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Cameron. He’s on Mulholland at Carrington’s place.” Shay shook his head. “Lotte’s there.”
“At de Sade’s?” I threw down the climbing gear. “Tell me she didn’t accept that job offer.”
Questions swirled in my mind as to why Cameron had turned up out of the blue.
He was sitting on one of de Sade’s loungers, enjoying the champagne and laughing at something one of them shared—acting like one of the boys. They didn’t seem perturbed.
He called over to them. “How’s the water?”
“Warm,” said de Sade. “You’re welcome to join us.”
Not naked though, please. Because having one more naked alpha here might push me over the edge—especially if that man was Cameron Cole.
Someone had tipped him off.
Even with his sunglasses on, I could see him eyeing the upside-down contract.
De Sade, Grantchester and Sinclair eventually climbed out of the pool and put some distance between us by soaking in the hot tub, taking advantage of the Cali sun—three best buddies hanging out while full-on scheming.
Cole’s presence was taming the mood.
I needed him gone.
I lifted the glass of champagne he’d put down next to me and took a gulp. “Did de Sade invite you to make sure I’m prepared for what this entails?”
Cameron glanced my way. “Yes.”
“Why?”
“I’m here to interrogate you.”
I pointed. “That’s the contract. I’m ready to sign. I certainly don’t need interviewing by you.”
They knew my worth.
“Why are you leaving Chrysalis?” he asked.
“I’ll draw unwanted attention to Chrysalis and Enthrall—because I’m your brother’s harlot.”
“That’s not good.”
“Why didn’t you dissuade me from dating your brother? You knew it would end like this.”
“You believe I should have done that?”
“You should have protected me.”
“I will always watch over you, Lotte.”
I set my glass down. “Are you upset I’m here?”
“No, but you seem to be.”
I reached for the contract and flipped it to the last page. Pulling the cap off the fountain pen, I signed my name.
