Cameron arched a brow. “Hope you didn’t do that because of the Cole family.”

“I’m disappearing,” I said. “Your scandal has removed herself.”

“Oh, don’t flatter yourself.”

I reached for my glass and took another swig to soothe myself.

It was done.

Cameron’s expression softened. “Lotte—”

“You can’t interfere,” I said. “I’ve made my decision.”

“I can see that.”

“You disapprove.”

“They own you now,” he said. “Is that what you wanted?”

“I can’t go back to Chrysalis.”

“Well, you could have—before you put pen to paper.”

“After that ruckus with me dating Henry, you wouldn’t want me at your Beverly Hills office. I imagine that job offer is rescinded.”

“Why? Because you’re the worst scandal to ever hit the Cole family?”

“It’s true.”

“You really believe that?”

“I couldn’t help myself,” I said. “We were right there in a tent in the middle of nowhere. Henry looked perfect. The moment he ripped off his shirt—”

“Yeah, let’s not discuss my brother’s assets.” He cringed.

“He’s going to be fine,” I said. “I just hope he finally sees through Reese.”

Cameron sipped his drink. “You of all people should suspect the truth becomes twisted when motivations are skewered.”

“He bought her a charm bracelet. I’m worried about him.”

“He did, yes,” said Cameron. “When she turned eighteen. He bought her a dress. Nothing more.”

I sprung up. “She made me believe he’d just bought her that bracelet.”

Reese wanted me out of the picture. I’d delivered myself up like a sacrificial lamb.

“Are you furious with me?” I asked.

“Do I seem furious?” He pulled out his phone and read a text—apparently already bored with my crumbling life.

“I had no choice,” I reasoned.

Cameron sat up and leaned toward me. “I thought you of all people understood my brother.”

“How do you mean?”

“He purchased the land in the preserve.”
