“Reese told me.”

“For the animal life, not for Reese.” He stood and offered me his hand.

“I’m not ready to leave,” I said.

“Walk with me.”

“I’ve signed the contract. It’s over.”

Cameron gave a frustrated sigh. “Reese is out of his life.”

For a moment I was light-headed. “How do you mean?”

“He’s selling the construction company. He’s made sure the preserve is secure for future generations. All the species will continue to be protected. But he’s out.”

“He’s out? But Reese told me—”

“He flew Reese and her daughter back to Florida this morning.” Cameron’s jaw flexed. “Permanently. Lilly will continue her studies at USC. He gave Reese a contract to sign at his house. Figured she’d be relaxed enough not to question it. He was right. She didn’t catch the small print.”

“What’s in the small print?” I stood up, unsteady on my feet.

“That’s confidential,” he replied gently.

I shouldn’t have left the gala last night.

What have I done?

Cameron reached down and took the contract from me, tucking it into his pocket.

“We certainly hire the best.”

I blinked up at him. “What?”

“I’m the silent partner, Charlotte.” Cameron pulled off his sunglasses. “Welcome to Pendulum.”

Iwas hit by a shockwave of emotions as Cameron walked away.

I kept replaying his words.

“Welcome to Pendulum.”

He’d dropped that revelation like it was nothing.

In a daze, I tried to gather my thoughts. Cameron Cole ruled the Pendulum consortium.

With shaky legs, I followed him into the house and up the winding stairway to the second floor, into the familiar sitting room where Richard and I had sat over a week ago—when de Sade had first offered me the job.

Reese was out of the picture. Out of Henry’s life.

And I’d just signed my life away.

The bitterly cruel timing was not lost on me.

Henry had asked me to trust him.

Oh, God.

I hung my head as waves of hopelessness washed over me.
