Henry’s deep voice rang out, sexy as hell, his speech flowing loudly with his usual panache as he thanked everyone for coming. Laughter rippled through the ballroom in response to some joke he shared.

The man would no doubt be swarmed by every single woman afterwards.

“Quite the view,” said a male voice.

Pivoting, I turned to see Cameron.

He stood beside me. “We can’t both be trying to avoid my brother?”

“I’m not avoiding him.”

“He likes you.”

I wasn’t sure about that.

“Henry appears pensive,” he said. “I sense that something happened at Cole Tower. He won’t talk to me. Maybe he’ll open up to you.”

I pulled a face. “We didn’t hit it off, to be honest.”

“I thought you did.”

“He’s hard to read.”

Cameron nodded in agreement, and then said, “The event’s going well.”

“I might bid on one of the auctions.”

He shook his head. “If you see something you like, I’ll buy it for you.”

I hung my head at his generosity. “No.”

He studied me. “How are things?”

“Fine.”

“You miss him?” said Cameron.

“Who?”

I’d loved him—how could I not? Austin had been fun and charismatic. But he drank too much and could be cruel.

“You know who,” Cameron said, gazing at me with sympathy.

Our love had been a lie that had torn its way free. I proved how strong I’d become by ending us.

I straightened. “I prefer not to talk about him.”

“Okay, how have you been?”

“I’ve missed you,” I said softly.

“I chose to leave Chrysalis,” he said. “But I respect that decision didn’t land well with everyone.”

“Richard shines in your position. But he’s no you.”

“You’re ready for a change, too.”

I turned to face him. “How do you do that?”
