“Oh, God,” she said, sounding panicked.

“Give it a second.”

Pulling out my phone, I shot off a text to inform the main desk. Then I sent one to my executive assistant, Jen.

Lilly reached out to push the button again.

“Let’s not touch anything else,” I said. “I’ve alerted my team.”

“Okay.”

Even her voice reminded me of someone.

A cold chill washed over me. “Are you interviewing here?”

“No.”

“Could you stand back, please?”

She moved to the other side of the elevator.

I remained against the glass wall, a sheer drop behind me. I drew in a steadying breath.

An awkward silence loomed.

Squeezing the bridge of my nose, I tried to center myself.

“You served in Afghanistan?” she asked. “That must have been terrifying.”

What the fuck?

I remembered that my bio could be found on our website. Only a young person would be brash enough to bring that up with the timing reserved for the naïve.

I suppressed my annoyance. “Who are you visiting?”

“You.”

I felt a sting of regret for not asking her to get out when I’d had the chance. “All appointments go through my executive assistant.”

“She wouldn’t set one.”

“Then how did you get in?”

“Visitor’s pass.”

Still, she shouldn’t have gotten access to the fifth floor.

“You got in here with me on purpose?” I said quietly, my jaw flexing.

She reached out and offered me the envelope.

I chose not to take it.

A million thoughts crowded my mind. “Who’s it from?”

“Reese.”

My heart missed a beat. “Who?”
