“Let’s get this over with,” she said, her voice sounding breathy.

“Wait here.”

I climbed out of the car, strolling around the front of the Jag to get to her side and then opened her door.

“Thank you.” Lotte took my hand and climbed out.

She peered up at me, maybe wondering why we were standing so close—but neither of us moved. We merely lingered as though we’d been magnetically drawn to each other.

I wanted to reach out, wanted to brush my thumb over her plump lips as though we’d already become more.

Finally, I stepped back and gave her space.

Atop this high canyon, standing regally in all its majesty, was that familiar Bel Air mansion—though we were seeing it from the side view.

Sparkling lights shone from the sprawling hills beyond.

If I strolled around the corner, I’d arrive at the entrance of Chrysalis. If I went inside, I’d again be entranced with their impressive chandelier.

Lotte didn’t seem to realize I recognized where she’d brought me.

Three nights ago, I’d visited this sanctum.

Her sanctum.

I wasn’t annoyed, merely amused.

A valet hurried from around the corner and took Lotte’s car keys. Her Jag was quickly driven out of sight.

Together, we strolled beneath the dark green awning.

Entering the restaurant, I admired the French-styled theme that blended luxury and intimacy into an art form.

“What’s the name of this place?” I watched her reaction.

“Imperial.”

“Of course it is,” I mumbled. “How’s the food?”

“Delicious.”

She led the way over to the concierge, who greeted us with aplomb to show we were expected and he in turn led us through a double doorway into a busy restaurant.

Lotte’s fingers slid naturally into my grasp, sending an unnerving tingle through me.

Unwittingly, I snapped my hand away.

She glanced at me with curiosity.

With a nod of apology, I took her hand in mine again, weaving my fingers through hers.

No one seemed to notice us, which didn’t make sense to me. This woman was clearly stunning, her presence even prickling the hairs on my nape.

The restaurant appeared normal enough. Luxurious high-backed chairs were placed around generously-sized tables where elegant guests dined.

The restaurant at Chrysalis could pass as any fine-dining experience.

Little minx.
