“Well, he’s the best person to talk with about this.”

“Maybe. But not yet.”

Shay conceded with a wary nod.

“Opening that letter will open up old wounds,” I said.

I ceased chopping and turned to face him with a somber expression. “I flew out there and gave up months of my life searching for her. I trekked over the mountains, searching for a body.”

That ordeal had destroyed me.

“It’s probably a hoax,” he said softly. “Keep the envelope in the safe. If it’s a listening device, it’s blocked.”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“We’ll open it together,” he said softly. “Just say when.”

“Can you take Dex for a couple of days?” I said, changing the subject.

“Sure. Always a pleasure.”

“I appreciate that.” I smiled at him. “I head out to Geneva tonight.”

“That’s right. You’re taking the new formula to show your dad.”

“Exactly, I need to be dialed in.”No distractions.

“Welcome to the party!” announced Shay.

I glanced up.

Lotte stood in the doorway, a confused expression on her face.

I held my breath for a long moment, slowly taking in the vision of feminine beauty.

She wore jeans and a jacket over a John Lennon T-shirt, her naturally rouged mouth looking kissable. Even with no makeup she was still striking. Her short dark hair was tucked behind her ears.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

Richard appeared behind Lotte in the doorway. “Whoa!”

I mirrored Lotte’s sentiment with an expression that saidwhat the fuck is she doing here?

I never expected to see her at Charlie’s.

Chopping vegetables wasn’t exactly on brand for me, and letting someone else see that my younger brother had ordered me to work here felt humiliating.

“Did you both pick the same day to volunteer?” Richard glanced from Lotte to me. “Seriously, I had no idea.”

Lotte glared at Shay, and he held up his hands to indicate he’d had nothing to do with me being here.

Lotte tucked her Smartphone and car keys into her jacket pocket. “Well, I’m here now.”

Shay quickly washed and dried his hands and then walked past Richard. “I’ll see you later, Henry.”

Richard stared at Shay’s back as he strolled out of the place, his expression revealing they’d messed up with having Lotte volunteer today.

“Did Cameron plan this?” I asked Richard.
