“Do you ever get lost? This place is huge.”

“Navigation is kind of my thing,” he said, chuckling.

“Of course it is.”

“Thank you for bringing me food.”

“You have a chef, but I thought it might be fun.”

“More ordinary.” He winked.

“Ordinary coming right up!”

He gave an apologetic cringe. “You’re far from ordinary.”

“I knew what you meant. I’m your friend from the cheap seats.”

“You’re starting to become someone I can’t live without.”

I almost forgot to breathe, feeling a spark of something greater between us than friendship, our body language being familiar and intimate.

His cologne reached me in all its complexity; rich and heady and dangerously seductive.

“Who else is here?” I asked, sounding breathless.

I recognized the door to his office.

He gripped the handle and opened it. “Come see.”

Dex scurried into the room ahead of us.

“Hey.” Cameron came over and I stepped into his hug.

Shay threw me a wave. “This is a nice surprise.”

I pointed to the take-out bag. “Dropping off some food.”

“And a gift,” said Cameron, taking it off Henry and giving it a shake.

“A small thing,” I said.

“And so thoughtful of you.” Henry glanced at his brother. “This is why we love her, right?” He smiled at me. “It’s good you’re here, Lotte.”

“Your timing is perfect,” said Cameron.

I tried to read the room as the atmosphere became tense, questioning if I should even stay. It appeared as though a personal revelation was about to be spilled.

I’d always held my own with the alphas back at Chrysalis, but the undertones here seemed solemn.

Henry reached for a pair of surgical gloves that were lying on the table and pulled them on.
