“Does she say where she is?” asked Shay.
“Florida,” Henry said quietly.
Reese had been living only hours away from New York, an easy flight when he’d been based there.
I felt compelled to snatch the letter from him and set a match to it. Burn it up and end this painful charade.
“What exactly does she say?” asked Cameron.
“She’s sent coordinates for her location. Instructions on how to reach her base.”
“Base?” asked Shay.
My heart ached for him.
“I’ll take it,” Shay said softly, holding out his hand for the letter.
Henry’s tormented gaze met mine, the letter not leaving his grip.
Saying goodbye to Lotte this time felt much harder.
Our hug at the door lasted longer than expected, our affection deepening. She was fast becoming the friend I needed.
Our differences didn’t seem to matter so much when we were in the same room together. She was probably the most reasonable human I’d ever met.
I felt grateful for her presence over the last few hours.
And I’d enjoy opening her gift—a kind gesture.
My mind turned back toward that letter. Shay had insisted on taking it from me but not before I’d taken a snapshot with my iPhone.
Was I being given another chance to save Reese?
If this ended up being a grand hoax, at least I’d have my answer.
I threw my old rucksack onto the bed and started going through my drawers, dragging out khaki pants and other clothes, and searching my wardrobe for my hiking kit, checking off what I’d need for every type of terrain.
What gave me faith was the fact that the silverRhad come from a charm bracelet I’d given to her before she’d left for Chile.
Cameron hurried into my bedroom, eyeing the kit on the bed.
Finally he said, “You’ve worked out the coordinates?”
I nodded. “Of course. Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park.”
“You’re not serious?” he said angrily. “It’s an enormous preserve, and that whole area is rife with danger.”
“I could do with some alone time in nature.”
“Wildcats. Gators. Poisonous snakes. Not to mention what you’ll face when you arrive at those coordinates.”
I shrugged. “I’m going to grab some anti-venom on the way.”
“I’m sure that will help in the middle of fucking nowhere.”
“What if that letter had come from Mia? Same situation?”
He gritted his teeth in frustration. “Reese needs to come here.”
