“Now I have to watch over you.”

“I’m more than capable of taking care of myself,” I said.

“You’ll be a distraction.”

“Henry, I’m carrying our medical kit. My pharmacy background could come in handy. I have anti-venom, an EpiPen and bear spray. Cameron prescribed emergency pain meds.”

“Yeah, but if a gator grabs you, how do you get free?”

“Did you Google it?”

“Yeah.” He smirked. “If that happens, we’re fucked.”

“What I do know from growing up there is that you avoid any body of water. Those prehistoric creatures lurk in the most unlikely places.”

“We’re literally going to be on a boat at some point.”

“Oh, fun.”

Henry reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a map. “Want to see where we’re going?” He unfolded it. “I have a copy on my watch but if that fails, we have a backup.”

The jet’s engine thrummed as the plane maneuvered to face the runway.

“The coordinates,” Henry pointed to the center of a forest, “will lead us here.”

The preserve’s vast territory was made up of snaking waterways and dense woodland.

I shuddered at the thought of what we might come across.

“Can you not just ask Reese to meet you in Naples?” I said.

“Having regrets already?”

“There’s no way of contacting her?”

“No.” Henry turned to peer out of the window. “I’ll be able to say everything that’s been on my mind all these years.”

I started to ask for details, but then thought better of it.

And if it wasn’t her? What would he do then?

“One step at a time,” I said softly.

I fastened my seatbelt, gazing past his hunky frame out the oval window as the plane glided down the runway.

“There’s still time to back out,” he whispered.

Reaching for him, I weaved my fingers through his. He considered our interwoven hands and clenched mine tighter.

He let out a deep breath, revealing his understanding of the special moment happening between us.

“Lieutenant Commander,” I said. “Let’s do this.”

After arriving at Naples Airport, a town car picked us up on the tarmac and drove us to the Ritz Carlton Golf Resort, an exquisite beachfront hotel.

The concierge had been expecting us.

Henry refused any help with our luggage, telling me that being separated from our kit was inadvisable.
